Is a 25-Minute Drive to a Photo and Video Production Studio Worth It?

If you're coming from Downtown San Diego, a North County photo and video production studio looks like a longer trip than the one you're used to. The drive from Downtown to Poway is about 25 minutes on our own estimate, and that number is approximate and depends on traffic. The useful question isn't whether 25 minutes is long. It's what you get back for it.

Start with the clock you're really paying for

A studio booking is billed from the start of your block, not from the moment your first frame is lit. Load-in, setup and a test shot all come out of the hours you've paid for. That makes the drive matter less than what happens when you arrive. A studio where you can pull up close, unload once and start setting up is worth more than one that's nearer on the map but has you circling for a spot and hauling cases across a garage.

Gear changes the math. A creator with a phone and a ring light can go anywhere. A product shoot with a seamless backdrop, stands and a few cases of kit is a different trip, and every extra carry between the car and the shooting floor is time on the clock.

Where the drive pays you back

Where it doesn't

Short bookings are the weak spot. If you only need an hour for a few headshots, a 25-minute drive each way can cost more of your day than the shoot itself. The same goes for anything you'd redo often: if you'd be back every week for a short session, a closer option may win even if it's less comfortable.

Timing matters too. Drive times to and from North County move with traffic, so the 25-minute figure is a starting point, not a promise. If your block starts at a busy hour, leave earlier than you think you need to, and don't schedule anything tight right behind the shoot.

A quick way to decide

Work out your whole-day cost instead of the drive alone. Add the round-trip time, the parking, any difference in hourly price, and the setup time you'd lose to a hard load-in. Then compare that total for each studio you're considering. A cheaper hourly rate at a studio with a miserable load-in can end up costing more than a pricier one where you're shooting in ten minutes.

For comparison, our own published figures put Rancho Bernardo and Scripps Ranch at about 10 minutes, Escondido about 15, and La Jolla and Del Mar about 20. If your crew is spread across the region, that spread can matter more than the distance from any one person's house.

What to ask before you drive anywhere

When Poway Studio opens for bookings, we plan to answer those on the listing so you can do the math before you leave the house. Until then, price your next shoot as a total, not as an hourly rate plus a guess about the drive.
